Light meters?

After getting my latest roll of slides back I decided it was time to start
learning to use a light meter. About 25% of my slides had exposure
problems. I've been shooting at 1/50th and 6.? f-stop with my realist. The
next roll I shoot I plan to try the "sunny 16" rule.
I would like to get some tips on using a light meter though. I got some
books out of the library, but none were very helpful.
My basic question is how do I make use of the number that the light meter
is giving me? How does this relate to the settings on my camera? I know
this is pretty basic stuff. So basic the books don't even cover it. The
light meter was a $5.00 special at a recent camera show, so it came without
any documentation.
