Slides to GIF?

Does anyone know of a service, or cheap way, to take Realist
Format slides and convert them to GIF,JPG,BMP or other
computer format. 
I have a hand scanner, but that doesn't do much good for slides, and
the quality would be lacking anyway. How do the professionals convert
slides/prints to GIF? (I'm guessing the answer is: Really expensive 
flatbed page scanners). I suppose they also convert slides to prints 
first (it would ruin the great colors you get with slides).
Well, I don't have a bunch of money for scanners, how about a service
thay will do it for me?
My goal is to covert some of my Realist Format slides to GIF so I can
make RED/BULE pictures for my web page, and perhaps some 
sides-by-sides too. Any suggestions on how to get my 3d slides on the 
web?
