I assume you are trimming the leader ?
Older 35mm film used to have a nice 4" leader which these days is down 
to 1.5" or so. You need more to clear the pickup for the perforations.
There is a nice picture of some Kodachrome 20 on Page 10 of the realist 
manual. Its online somewhere.
 
Make a little card template and carry nail scissors to let you trim to 
4" and its easy.

Being a old leica owner this becomes a habit :-)

I mean an owner of an old leica.
