You don't need to trim the film to load a Realist, but you MUST do it to
load an Iloca I. This was the Iloca that gives the 7p format - and it
loads like the early Leicas. Since you drop the film canister and the
take-up spool into the bottom of the camera as a unit with the film
leader between, and the toothed sprocket wheel is at the top of the
camera, you need the cut leader to clear the sprocket before you start
winding. The sprockets then run over the wheel, turning it until it
locks the film advance.
Just thought you'd like to know! (There was a suggestion that trimming
the leader was unnecessary for ANY stereo camera)
