Infamous Realist Light Leak

I would like to bring the infamous Realist light leak problem, up for
discussion AGAIN!!!

It has been my experience that 1 out of 2 or 1 out of 3 Realists show
a light leak. The production date of the camera seems to have no
effect as the design was not really changed. Most common source for the
leak appears to be the side where the back fits to the body. There
can be other sources too. The leak manifests itself as an orange
steak, usually appearing from bottom to top (that means from top of
camera). Using fast films, direct exposure to sun and not using a
case, aggrevate the situation (as it has been noted in the past, with
ASA 10 slide film this was not a problem in the 50s).

I would like to ask if other people have any experience with:
- the frequency of this problem
- sources of the leak
- ways to get rid of it

Also, Realist dealers and resellers, do you consider the light leak a
valid reason for returning the camera?

My very own 2.8 did have a leak. I simply bent the back a bit and the
leak disappeared. I have tried to "correct" another camera where the
back appeared to be fitting losely, by bending the hooks and making the
back fit tighter, but never got a response if that hepled on not. I am
now ready to work on another "light leaking" camera.

Is this a Realist mainly problem or do other cameras show it as well?

Any information will be appreciated. This is a very common and rather
disturbing problem. It should be discussed more often or someone (Dr.
T perhaps? ;)) should write something definite about the nature and
frequency of the problem and all the possible solutions!

Thanks! -- George Themelis
