Scrapbooks

I saw a recent post on photo-3d by someone who wished to cut up old
photography magazines in order to make a scrapbook of camera
advertisements.

Now, I don't wish to start a public argument or flaming match over
this issue, or to embarass anyone (particularly myself!),
but I must give my own reaction: I strongly disapprove of cutting
up rare old magazines to make a scrapbook. Usually people who do
this do not even document where the cut-outs came from, and the
collection is next to worthless. Make copies, yes; but leave the
original magazines intact: they are much more valuable that way.
Even the loss of a single page cuts the value of most old magazines
in half, or renders them virtually worthless.

The very worst offenders are people who go into libraries and steal

pages from magazines. If I ever catch someone doing that, heaven
forbid,
I will probably kill the miscreant and plead justifiable homicide.
As I am basically against killing, I hope that this never happens.

When one tears up a rare old periodical, one is destroying an
historical document. To put the pieces in a scrapbook which might
allow your identification years hence is to run the risk of going
down in history as a tasteless vandal. Please don't do it!
Use Xerox instead. Xerox has the added advantage that it allows you
to copy ads in other people's collections, thus increasing greatly
the
scope of your findings. If you xerox onto good, low-acid paper,
your copy may even outlast the original.
