The Kodak Enigma

Did anyone else have the same reaction to the Kodak focusing
article in the latest Inside 3-D that I had. Seems to me
that getting the camera in perfect focus at 15 feet with a
ground glass, and then moving the focusing scale so it shows
a distance of 10 feet is a strange solution to any focusing
problem. When I set the distance to 10 feet, I want the best
focus to be at 10 feet, not 15!!!
It would seen to me the problem is either:
1. The camera lenses have not been focused properly.
2. The allowable circle of confusion was too big when the
depth of field scale was designed for the Kodak. Which means
that the focus at infinity will not be good enough to
satisfy most people when using the dof scale and setting the
hyperfocal distance. (Kodak's dof scale is much less
conservative than the dof on other cameras I own.)
3. The actual focusing scale on the Kodak is calibrated
wrong. (Thats the only way I can see that after moving the
scale to 9 or 10 feet while focused at 15 feet, the camera
would still focus properly at 4 feet!)
If #2 is the problem, as I suspect, then wouldn't a better
solution be to use 1 or 2 f-stops lower than your actual
setting when setting the hyperfocal distance?
If this article is as far off base as it seems to me, it is
a great disservice to the reader.
