No.  Some of those light attachments (fairly common) have a transfomer attached
to them.  Not quite as common, but I've seen them from time to time so they
couldn't be all that rare.  Adds a bit to the price, but with or without the cord,
they aren't terribly expensive (although there will be that occasional seller
who thinks a model 'C' is worth $50 :-).

I've seen a *LOT* more of those than I've seen Model 'D' viewers.  :-)

P.S. - I don't think they are a "knock-off" as you might mean.  Even though it
       says "Lumaview" in big print, if you look at the teeny-tiny print toward
       the bottom of the back (where it says LumaView in large print) it will
       say "Sawyer's....".  At least on my Lumaview one.  :-)
