Stereograph Glass Positives

I need information on what I believe to be a collection of
"Stereograph Glass Positives (plates)." The outer box 
reads:

"POSITIFS  Sur Verre Pour Le STEREOSCOPE et la 
PROJECTION"

The glass plates are stereo images of the Vatican
"Musee Du Vatican"  they measure 1.75x4.25.
The collection consist of 60 plates and is in its original box
and sub-boxes.

CAN YOU PLEASE OFFER SOME ADVICE AS TO WHAT THESE ARE?
WHAT THEY WERE USED FOR? WHERE CAN I GET MORE INFO?
