Seeing talk about the metal-knobbed red button Realist viewer has set me
tothinking, since I bought one (from Dr. T -- THANKS AGAIN), I've been
concerned about protecting it from damage such as case cracking, etc. Anybody
got any suggestions on a reasonably inexpensive way to kludge together a case
to protect this valuable asset to my stereo collection?
Mark...this is an excellent point...and I have discussed this one with Dr.T
at length... here are some things that I do with older viewers. Most of this
was sent to Dr.T when he was formulating and updating his informational books
on viewers. To any one reading this...I recommend his books....available for
a wide rage of viewers....contactr Dr.T at:

1) Cork padded feet: You can get them at any hardware store...granted Home
Depot didnt put them out of business....otherwise...get em' at Home Depot.
Called MAGIC MOUNTS....the come in packs of 36....each cork pad is about
1/2in in diameter, thin for ow profile, and they are removeable...so you wont
damage the viewer in any way. Place these on the bottom of any viewer...at
the points where the bottom contacts the surface you put it on. WHY: Over
time...putting a viewer down on hard table tops and surfaces will scratch,
chip or crak a viewer.....by placing these pads on the bottom....you soften
the blow....also most important....a Realist viewer (almost any old viewer)
on a slippery table top is like a hockey puck on ice....and accidentasl
elbow....will send that viewer into its grave...or to the emergency repair
room if it survives the crash.
One step beyond the pads....you can try this.
2) Felt Realist Red button base kit. Removable from the bottom if
necessary, protects from scratches, chipping and breakage. You can punch a
hole where the tripod mount is, after you run your finger over the area. The
screw it into the tripod an it will part the felt. Felt protects from
damage to the viewer by those metal; friction tripod head plates. For those
purists, the felt can be removed at any time. You can make it yourself by
going to any hardware store, or Staples, or a stationary store and getting
felt sheets....with an adhesive sticky pad (also removeable) on one side.
Take your viewer and place the base ovber the felt...with an X-Acto
knife...cut out a piece the shape of your viewer base....and stick it to the
bottom of the viewer....poke a hole with your X-Acto knife where the viewer
accepts a tripod screw. Felt is more tactile than the bare viewer
bottom...but won't hold against slippage like cork will.....but it sure
protects the viewer...in case it comes down hard accidentally.
3) Finally....get some bubble wrap bags...go to your local packaging
store....these are like sealable baggies...but all bubble wrap...come in
different sizes. I carry any viewer I have in these....very protective, non
bulky...great when you travel. I also find that silver bags work well...but
dont have the padding that bubble wrap bags do....you can get them at jewelry
supply houses....yard sales, estate sales....as people often had them for
their good silver plateware...they come in all sizes...and they are great
because after you use a viewer....pass it around...etc....and when done, you
can put it in there and rub it down...remove all the greases and oils that
human hands and faces give off on a viewer, washable as well.
Thats it for now...Protect all viewers...and the world will be a better
place! Regar-D-D-D-s Jon Golden
