I think Tony was speaking for himself! As another Brit, I have been
"sold" on the Realist format mount, and prefer these to separate mount
for sheer convenience. Incidentally, Tony also sells projectors for this
format (the FED) but he didn't mention that in his post...

Exactly my reasons. Plus, well - have you ever tried to change the order
of slides in a dissolve AV projection show when they're mounted in 2x2s?
Doesn't really bear thinking about!

No idea - and I haven't seen any ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs that shed
any light on the subject, either...
