Re: Cooling fans on projectors

As a youth working in a photo store, I overheard the salesmen telling
customers what I still believe are good reasons for a separately
switched fan: When bringing a projector into the house from a cold
car to show slides away from home, a fan can help bring the bulbs
up to room temperature before they are lit, thus reducing the risk
of shattering. Also, after the show, taking the projector out into
sub-zero weather while the bulb is still hot can risk a failure.
Finally, sometimes a projector must be moved immediately after the
show--perhaps to set it on the floor to allow the table to be used
for refreshments, for example. The fan can cool the lamps more
quickly, reducing the risk of jarring a hot filament.
