The debate over square vs. rectangular format has been going on for years
- mostly related to Hassleblad/Rollei square vs. 120 other. In the end,
it's a matter of aesthetic preference and, to an extent, economy. Some
artists prefer square canvases, others portrait, others landscape. (And
some have abandoned canvas altogether!) 

In the days when color slide film and processing were relatively
expensive, the economy argument was more persuasive than today.
