I should probably comment that I'm headed the other way from Joel -
I'm moving towards putting all documents into .pdf format (although
it is still a bit buggy - particularly when trying to print on small
machines with limited memory - but you can usually get by with
doing just a few pages at a time). As long as Joel is agreeable,
probably both formats will be available, with pdf files here and
html versions at his site.

Acrobat Pro version 3 is due to ship on Friday (educational price of
$50 or so). I'm waiting with great expectations for it. The major
problems I've had at this point is generating level 2 postscript which
cuts people with level 1 printers out of the picture, although they
can still read the documents ok on the screen. Most of the photo-3d
documents are designed to be printed rather than read off the screen.

I'm headed to a conference in Dallas on The Digital Library tomorrow
which specifically addresses the storing and cataloging of images online,
and I'll be interested to hear what they have to say
about formats. Also, considering the recent discussions on digital
cameras, it would be worthwhile for anyone interested in the topic
to check out the current WIRED magazine with it's article on Corbus,
Bill Gates stock photo service, which is digitally based. They project
(if I get the gist of the article right) that digital photography will
surpass traditional photo methods with chemicals and paper in perhaps
10 years in terms of quality and cost. Extremely interesting.

THANKS
