Re Rollei Twin Lens Projector
Mike Sherer asks about the Rollei Twin lens projector and the possibilities
of converting it stereo . The first time I saw a projector like that it was
advertised in the 3D foto world catalogue I kind of European Reel 3D who I
think are defunct. This was actualy called the a 3-Date projector and I
later saw it in a standard photographic magazine and it is normaly a mono
dissolve projector but presumably the 3D foto world version was modified to
project two 2x2 slides together. They also advertised a modified version in
their second hand list which as far as I could translate from German was
different still to the new models in the catalogue although I was not shure
how . Thinking about this I got the idea that perhaps they could be adapted
to project realist type 101 mm slides. Every other movement the slide has
to be moved across two slide widths which would be enough to move a 101mm
slide if it could be made permanent and an extension made to each our
further . On the newer models there is a box containing the controls on
the other side to the slide rack which is at least as wide as the rack. So
there is enough room on the base for 101mm slides if this box could be
moved across and supported on brackets . Two normal slide racks could
perhaps be glued together with the side of one sliced off to give a 101mm
rack.
Later I saw the Rolleivision version of this which is perhaps the original
as their first version was the P3800 mentioned by Mike Sherer which came
out in 1976 followed by the P3801 and the Rolleivision 35 Twin in 1984 .
Then the Rolleivision 35 twin digital and the Rolleivision 35 Twin digital
P. These were sold by the Widescreen centre in the uk among others but were
soon replaced by the Twin MSC 300. At the time they cost about a thousand
pounds sterling without lenses the Widescreen told me there was a
modification made for stereo but it added another 1000 to the price!. This
took two slides at a time and projected them together . They also told me
of someone who made his own modification and I wrote to him but he replied
by phone and got my father who is a bit deaf so the message was a bit
garbled but he seemed to still be having problems with getting it to work.
I have also heard of a similar model by reflecta from one source only and
the 3-Date seems to have disapeared so perhaps both these infringed
Rollei's patents.
At the auction at the I.S.U. congress at Eastbourne 4 years ago there
were two P3800's or P3801's being sold by David Burder and one was
apparently already converted for stereo projection and one was not working
there reserves were 75 and 80 pounds sterling .I bid up to 75 for the one
which was all I had but was then outbid. They had not got round to the
second by the time the auction had to end so it went unsold. I am stil
looking out for one of these projectors preferably a later model to try out
my idea but it would need to be cheap as it may not work at all one I have
messed around with it . P.J.Homer
