Mark, the Belplasca has a "B" setting (this comes from "Bulb", I believe
from the air release cables that had a bulb that you'd press and keep the
shutter open). The Realist had both "B" and "T" settings. "T" stands for
"Time" and will keep the shutter open until the shutter button is pressed
again. Even if a camera does not have a "T" setting, most cable realease
cables have a locking capablity so you can use the camera in "B" and lock
the cable for long exposures. One great advantage of older stereo cameras
is that they do not rely on batteries to keep the shutter open.
Star trails, like other natural phenomena, can be recorded in 3d.
Basically, anything that can be recorded in 2d can be recorded in 3d.
You have noticed that many of the more successful pictures of star trails
include something else in the foreground like a building or a tree?
To make the 3d picture more interesting you can try and include something
similar to give the depth needed. The trails will act as the distant
backround or sky painting. Same applies for the northern lights, rainbows
and fireworks with a regular stereo camera. I always wanted to capture a
good 3d picture of star trails but have not succeeded yet.
