Arrow-View Viewer

With all this talk about viewers lately, I thought I would share with
everyone my experience with a most unusual viewer I had occcasion to
borrow and use for a few weeks.

I was treating a kindly elderly gentleman (80-something) by the name of
Sam Rubin in my office and was enjoying a small-talk conversation with
him. We got on the subject of hobbies and interests, and I mentioned
mine (3d). His eyes lit up and he said that he was all too familiar with
it, as he had invented, patented and produced the only multiple slide 3d
viewer ever (as far as he knew). He told the story that about 1945 he
devoted his entire fortune to producing this viewer, and ultimately sold
about 1500 of them. I was astounded and a little skeptical.

A week later he brought it to the office for me to see and allowed me to
borrow it for a few weeks. It's called the Arrow-View and it really is a
work of art. I photographed it in both stereo and 2d for posterity sake.
He has only 2 viewers left and has no idea of how many remain "out
there". He recycled the dies and parts so there is no chance of ever
seeing a "new one" again. I will be sharing the pictures/slides with Dr.
T and if anyone else is interested in seeing it, I will try to reproduce
the pix in larger numbers or perhaps will scan and post the image.

The sad thing is that Sam never came close to recouping his investment
and is really a bit bitter about the demise of 3d (according to him,
again). Well, at least I have afforded him a small degree of fame today.

Dr. Mike
