Duplicating Slide Rolls

The imaginary fried Bruce Springsteen and I have been fooling around lately
with the idea of, when we *know* we have pictures to keep/duplicate on a
roll, the possibility of having an entire roll of film used as a master and
only cutting up the duplicate roll into chips for mounting. This would
leave the orginals uncut as suitable for reduplication at any time.
The question for the list is: What is/would be this process called, so we
can ask for it at any reasonably competant processor and get back what we
want? We'd even consider using negative film and then taking positive dupes
from that, in effect doubling the film and processing cost for every
"archivable" roll.
I've even imagined a gadget that would take returned, processed negative
rolls and feed them past a slit of light at a constant rate to negatively
expose a second roll of negative film to make a positive....
