Hi..After noticing a long thread of posts seeking my address I will post
it. It is romney@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for email , My new photo website is
edromney@xxxxxxxxxxx/ Phone is 864-597-1882, snail mail address is Box
487 Drayton SC,29333. I'm not retired by any means and all my repair texts
including Realist are still in print. The original Realist repair text was
written in 1978 and sold about 2000 copies, many which still circulate. It
was revised in 1982 after my conversation then with Seton Rochewite,
Realist inventor, and a Mr West of David White Co. who was there when
Realists were made. The 1982 edition has sold over a thousand copies and
will soon go out of print. These men pointed out to me a few problems in
my first book. Specifically the camera I used in 1978 was missing the four
screws used to adjust film plane flatness and I was collimating then by the
age old repair practice of shims instead of rotating the focus knob on its
shaft which Rochewite recommended. I put a lot of info on using the
Realist camera into both of the the books because I found many so-called
repair problems with the cameras came from owners not knowing how to use
them. Sorry if that is considered"padding the book", And I am a 1950's
style photographer in style.
As per light leaks, if you shine a light down the open lens masked well
in a dark room, you'll see what is wrong. String or Ensolite is good
gasket stuff. Realists synch strobe at all speeds if in good repair. The 11
x 17 photo plates in my repair book (which many like) were taken with my
old rebuilt Praktica TL with some kind of E. German lens. I use only the
F3.5 Realist, good enough for me, if collimated OK. . I've bought a lot of
them in yard sales, etc. cleaned them up and adjusted them and sold them.
Simple things like RF mirrors that were replaced with new ones cut from
mirrors out of old Polaroids and epoxied in .. I borrowed the hinged
lenscaps off hopeless cameras to put on better ones None I sold ever came
back.
We' ll revise the Realist repair manual again soon. I could also
reprint an old correspondence course chapter dating to about 1948 on the
Realist repair and add it to next the book if people want a more
traditional approach as well. I stopped fixing cameras for others about
1980, too busy, but I still buy yard sale Realists on occasion and fix
them up and sell them by mail to keep in practice. I'm willing to discuss
Realist repair tech but I don't like getting flamed. Best wishes to the
group...Ed Romney
