Antique negs question

A while ago, I got at an auction a whole mess of antique glass negs. Some
of them are stereo views. Due to age and neglect, they've become very dirty
and grimy. How can I clean these items without scratching or destroying
them entirely?
The negs seem to be the product of an amateur photog, because the glass
cutting is rather sloppy; either crooked or irregular cutting. This (to me)
means that the guy coated his glass plates himself (?). Anyway, I'm dying
to print these things. What do I do? Thanks for any help!
Best,
Bob
