I think this is simply because life in general moved more slowly in the past
than it does today. Even a "fad", as one might arguably call parlor viewers and
stereo cards, tended to linger much longer than today's fads, which people burn
out on in months rather than years. Also, I think manufacturers were slower to
give up on fads in the past. Stereo cards continued to be produced long after
they ceased to be widely popular. Today if vast audiences don't watch a new TV
series in its first episode, it won't have a second one.
