Is 2d photography's poplularity related to "the proliferation of...cheap
supermarket and drugstore processing" or the proliferation of "1-Hour"
processing? (What is the relative market share?) IMO, consumers are
willing to pay almost any price, both increased cost of processing and
deterioration of quality, for the convenience and "instant gratification"
of today's point-and-shoot/quick-print camera/processing combination.
The vast majority of snapshooters just can't be bothered with the
trouble of taking or viewing stereo photos. (I don't believe most
of the photo taking public has the slightest idea what an f-stop or
shutter speed is, yet alone depth of field.)

I agree, these are probably the far more significant factors.
