Stereo on the Telly
Last night 25/11/96 the UK science program "Tomorrows World" haf a piece on
3D displays for air traffic controllers etc. The first device was a
spinning helical screw inside a cylinder which was the screen for a
scanning laser beam synchronised with the helix. This is actualy an old
idea and was featured in "New Scientist" some time ago . the next device
was similar to something mentioned in this group recently . A glass cube
but now a few centimetres in size rather than millimetres doped with
phosphor which only recieved enough energy to fluoresce where the two
scanning laser beams intersected . It actualy seemed to be made up of two
right angle prisms as with a Swan cube which was an early method of
producing a stereo image without two lenses being required although there
did not seem to be any connection with this device . The third item was
about 3D television but I could not understand what was going on here.
The presenter was illuminated with strips of red, blue and green light and
an image which of course was not stereo on the telly and was very poor
quality generated from the way the light was affected by the subject.
