Hopefully your talking of converting 2D stereo pairs into anaglyph.
It's not possible of course with 1 2D pic. As Bob Wier mentioned the
P3D archives are a great place to search.
1. History wise can't help here but am sure some of the other anaglyph
fanatics might be able to help you out. (I say fanatics in a postive sense)
2. How to make an anaglyph is basically the same way a stereo pair is made.
Very recently Dave Harvey has put up on his web site a very nice program
that makes 3D anaglyphs and more! It is very good and is available as
shareware. After 30 days if you like it you can purchase and register it.
BTW it also makes stereo pairs automatically cropped and has support for
converting stereo pairs into LCD shutter glasses format. Interlaced.
Supports Simuleyes also. It is available on the authors home page at
http://members.gnn.com/tronix3d/html/index.htm
It is called 3D-Factory.
In the programs help file you'll find the idea of how to make anaglyphs.
I am still trying out all its features and will give my thoughts on it
soon. So far it looks very promising.
Another site that explains on how to make anaglyphs using Adobe Photoshop
or similiar grahpics programs that have the same features is at
http://www.3d-web.com/ana_demo/pana.htm
This method takes more work than using the automated features of the first
program 3D-Factory.
There are a couple of other programs available commercially that convert
stereo pairs to anaglyphs but the two above should do fine.
3. Their are a couple of ways our eyes or more specifically our brain
determines depth. The principle way in stereoscopic depth, is by the slight
differences in perspective our eyes see.
4. As for literature in regards to anaglyh, a good one to learn the
fundamentals intimately would be Constructing anaglyph images on Phantogram
Perrspective Charts. This is available by Reel 3-D and you can order and
check the books description at their web site at
http://www.3d-web.com/reel/books/makeana.htm
