Flash units which have a cylinder (handle which may contain batteries) with
a big blocky "ball" on the top end of it (flash bulb, mirror, electronics,
etc).  This is "as opposed to" the generally lower power flashes which
are just "the blocky ball".

Looks like a potato masher (really more like a potato hammer).

P.S. - If one *really* wants a  *BRIGHT* flash, some of the larger old flash
       bulbs were rated to be REALLY bright.  No fair leaving them behind in
       caves though.  :-)
