In photo-3d 1740 Dr. T states:
<I wish you guys lack... I find the subject a bit narrow... caves...
Is this an intentional pun? *{;-)
<All the SSA folios are open and they are about 60 people in 3
folios.
<That's all for the entire USA and Canada. There are a few PSA
folios
<incuding one that specializes in Nature Photography (that's the only
<specialized postal circuit that I know of and it is still much more
<general than caves!) I just cannot see how a group of people will
<go for a long time in a postal 3d circuit sharing nothing else other
<than pictures of caves...interior only I assume?
It may seem like a "narrow" subject for non-cavers, but it is nearly
limitless to cavers. There is a annual salon contest put on by the
National Speleological Society that draws up to a thousand entries.
It is usually whittled down to 200-500 images that are shown at the
salon. It is the highlight of the National Caving Convention. Caves
and cave formations are greatly varied and provide many photo
opportunities. There are dry dusty caves, cold wet alpine caves, hot
humid jungle caves, lava tubes (some still active). There are action
shots of rappelling, swimming or rafting lakes, tight crawls,
climbing, etc. Formations can be as small as a single calcite crystal
a few millimeters tall to massive columns a hundred feet tall. There
are stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, gours, anthodites, soda
straws, draperies, etc. I could go on and on and on, but if you are
not a caver you are probably already bored *{;-)
<George Themelis - Do you count an abandoned underground mine as a
cave???
<Oh, yeah, I was in a cave last year in Greece in the lovely island
of
>Kithira, but they did not allow flash photography and they were VERY
>serious about it! So, no, I do not have a single picture of a
cave...
NO - a mine is not a cave and should NEVER be entered. They are
unsafe and present many unseen potentially life threatening hazards.
Most states have strict laws about who and how to enter abandoned
mines. With that disclaimer, I do have some great shots of abandoned
mines (I entered legally after proper mine safety training).
I would like to allow mine, cave, rock shelter, sewer, subway, or
other underground slides in my proposed folio. There are some great
sites around the world that I have yet to see in stereo (at least
slides). Like the Catacombs in Paris, the abandoned water works in
New York, the Chunnel, the Mayan ruins, the interior of the Pyramids,
etc. Maybe I will call it the Underground Folio (I am open to all
suggestions).
Thanks for the time,
