VM Personal Flash

Bob Stern asks about a "cheap and dirty" way to operate an electronic
flash with a VM Personal. Knowing the store of wisdom on
this site I'm sure Bob will get lots of good advice.

In the 1993 Vol.4 edition of "ReView" , the magazine of the
now dormant VTCA an article by Carol Osman and Dale
Crosby called "Flash in a flash" gives just this information.
Plans and illustrated instructions for building a DIY flash
attachment for the Personal are given. The article says that all
the parts requiredcan be bought at Radio Shack (what we in
England call Tandy).

My only query about the method described in the article is
that I remember Wolfgang Sell telling me that it would also be
neccessary to make an adjustment to an internal flash delay
mechanism in the Personal which delayed shutter operation
slightly to allow for the time flash bulbs take to reach peak
luminocity.

I haven't made an attachment myself using this process , as
I use my VM Mk II when I need flash with VM format- this has a
modern X synch socket and a flash holder. I know this group is
reluctant to discuss the relative merits of eqipment , so I'm sure
no-one will want to contradict me when I ask if this is yet another
example of superior European technology?

If Bob can't find a copy of the "ReView" article locally , I'll be happy
to send a copy.

Readers of Dalia's latest catalogue will also have noticed an
interesting attachment to solve this Personal flash problem.

John Bradley
