The Chistmas lights are going up....

It's that time of year again.  I'm in San Francisco and I've fantasized
about taking nightime pics of Victorians decked out in Christmas lights.
Any tips for getting good exposures of night lighted scenes?  I have an
incident/reflecteve meter, but I'm afraid these might not be of much use.

I have a guide somewhere that gives some rules of thumb, but has anyone had
much success doing these types of scenes without having to bracket like crazy?
