I think the new generation is designed to allow zooms to be fitted, and
lens choice is at the personal request of the customer. In this case, I
guess the customer wanted zooms!
Personally, my preference in shooting or projecting is with primes.
Unless you go for some pretty exotic ($$) zooms, they will be visibly
inferior to good primes, slower and heavier.
(A few years ago when I was doing a lot of film work, this preference
was less than popular with many of the crew, who viewed the renting,
transportating, and fitting/refitting or prime lenses a hugh pain in the
butt. When the film came back from the lab, however, no one could argue
with the image quality we obtained from a fine zeiss or cooke prime!)
