Re: Pixar 3-D Holiday Party and problems

George, I do have something to add to that very sad story:
I was contacted by Annie Lore via voice mail a couple of days before the
"event" at Jobs' place. She said that she was in a desperate situation.
She said that she had "just" been given the go ahead to do this large
project for Pixar and would I help by volunteering to mount some slides. Or
recommend people to do this.
I couldn't respond to her in time because we were out of town. But as I
listened to the message, my first thought that this is a joke.
How could PIXAR expect an excellent product when they waited and waited to
give approval. Was she that hungry for the job. She didn't have enough time
to prepare. Then I thought that I'm just getting stuffy and old and this
was an opportunity to do some nifty 3D for a notable Silicon Valley firm.
And then I thought some more and remembered my days at Apple Computer and
the expectations put on vendors and the arrogance with which they were
treated. And I concluded that poor Anne Lore is headed for disaster.
I'm sad to say that I guess my feelings weren't that wrong.
Please understand that I don't have all the details of the story and this is
only my impression after hearing her message. I have never worked with PIXAR
but have worked with people who have worked with Jobs.
After I read H. Baize's account, I wondered: "Does this incident hurt our
world of 3D?" Andrew and I discussed it for a while and I concluded "No."
But I did conclude that companies tend to make decisions at the last minute
and expect miracles (is this really new?). So beware - don't get seduced by
them.
