I remember now! (it's amazing what a few hours of sleep will do!) The
problem was with non-matching reflections. These were shinny objects
(gems, the subject, not the pictures!) and flash or light reflections can
be a problem.
I still think you can use a hand-held SLR if you have an attached macro
lens with ring flash (all tubes ON) and pay attention to the vertical
alignment as you move from left to right (shoot left first if you want to
freeview the pairs in the uncut roll). Or the flash can be off camera and
held stationery by an assistant (what a luxury!)
Also, taking a stereo camera (Realist, etc.) in any museum is a great idea
with many unique photographic opportunities!!!
