What one should do in practice probably depends upon the person's history in
terms of accuracy of the "best guess". If one's "best guess" (that which is
bracketted around) is usually within 2/3'rds of a stop, then doing +/-
1/3 stop would yield better results.
If one is frequently off by 1.5 stops, then wider bracketting should be
done.
The more one is off "typically" (using one's own judgment by looking at
previous results) the larger the bracketting margins should be.
As one develops a better "best guess" one's bracketting margins probably
get smaller. Generally speaking.
One may also change one's bracketting depending upon the situation and
one's judgement of the likelyhood of error (e.g. - if the subject is 18%
gray and flat, then one may skip bracketting completely). :-)
Use error probablistic analysis. :-)
