RE: Hotfoot adapter - effect on color

Mike Province asked several questions about the flash adapter for the
Realist, including:
>Does it give correctly colored photos inside?
In his response George Themelis mentioned "whiter" pictures.
Mark Chapman responded:
>Yes the adapter works. It does not affect the color of photos as it
>is only a shoe adapter for the flash.
IMO, Mike's original question about color was somewhat ambiguous, and that
may be why we have two seemingly contradictory responses. From what I
can tell, Dr. T's response compares flash vs. non-flash pictures in the
situation(s) he describes; and Mark's response seems to compare flash
pictures using the adapter, vs flash pictures taken some other way.
The way colors are captured on film varies with the light source, which
is why Dr. T's response makes sense given the underlying assumption.
It should also be noted that color representation varies with exposure.
While most of us know that from seeing things like underexposed pictures
of snow that come out grey, it was quite an interesting, educational
experience for me when I first did a formal exposure test and saw with
my own eyes how much colors appear to change with differences in
exposure. Try it for yourself and see! (I'll post detailed
instructions as soon as I can, if I've managed by now to make anyone
who doesn't know how curious enough to try it.) E-mail me off list
if you don't want to get the credit or blame for egging me on!
