Realist flash options

The flash on a Realist (or similar) question has come a few times
recently, it seems. This is a subject I have been wanting to ask
about also. I get the impression that every time the topic comes
up, bits and pieces of advice come in from various sources. But
I have never seen a thorough discussion of all the alternatives
in a single place. This could be another business opportunity for
our prolific author, George Themelis. Every new 50's stereo camera
user will ask about this topic sooner or later. Why not have a
small booklet that could be sold to them with their camera (assuming
they buy it on-list...oops through sell-3D. Would this be a legal
post under the forthcoming rules?) If such a thing existed, I
would buy one today. I have yet to take my first flash picture
with my Realist, though often needed to. I recently tried to take
a stereo picture of some friends and their infant first child, using
available light, though I knew it was almost hopeless. Two indoor
and two outdoor shots came out totally useless and I probably won't
see these folks for at least another year.
