exposure/slide scans

Two questions - One: Is there a slide film that can handle light/dark
contrast of strong sun and deep shadows better than others? Exposure has
been a hot topic here lately, and I often find myself in heavy tree cover
with major dappling of subject matter, camouflaged like wildebeest in the
veldt (to coin a colorful simile).

Two: Since I took up 3d photography a year ago with a shabby but working
Realist 3.5, virtually all of my work has been on slide film; now how do I
get it on computer without shelling out $1000-plus on a slide scanner? Can
a digital imaging company work with pair mounts? I've got a feeling
they'll take one look at this format and throw up their hands (It's been a
long hunt to find anyone who can scan slides at all!) Anyone have any
experience in this arena?
