splitting photo-3d into more specific lists

  • Subject: splitting photo-3d into more specific lists

I signed up to two new mailing lists yesterday. I get digests from more
than 15 lists now. I'm sure there are more I will find in the future.
I've got too many interests. Too little time. Assuming photo-3d will
grow, double, triple, over time, I think it would be better for all of us
to have the list split up. As more people come online, the list as
structured now could generate 10 digests a day. Stereo World readers are
split about 50:50 between stereoview collectors and shooters. Imagine
another 500 stereoview collectors on this list, who might not have any
interest in using a stereo camera. The more specific a list is, the more
we will learn. I know I hold back a lot of posts on early stereo history,
because that is not the common thread on this list, and I don't want to
bore anyone. I, personally, would like to see it split into 4 lists, with
digests having numbered posts in a table of contents, and EACH POST
NUMBERED in the digest for easier finding, as there is often time to read
only one of the posts in that digest. Remember, not everyone wants to read
every message. My 4 lists would be:

AntiquePhoto-3d: this list would be for collectors of early stereo
photography, early stereoscopes, early stereo cameras, early stereo
literature and ephemera. It would include daguerreotypes, ambrotypes,
ferrotypes, albumen, gelatin, etc., stereo formats. It would include
shooters (modern day photographers using these early formats). It would
have the buying and selling of this subject material on this list (since
most of us would be collectors). Here would be included View Master, etc,
since this is more of a collecting genre.

photo-3d: this list would be for photographers and camera collectors, say,
post-1930. Here would be the Realist crowd, the projectionists, and
similar post-1930 stereo buffs. This list would be mostly shooters (this
is a term coined by long time Stereo World folks to differentiate between
those interested in collecting stereoviews, and those whose main interest
is in taking photographs with a Realist, or other camera made in the last
60 years. These photographers were given the nickname shooters).

sell-3d: this would be the buy/sell list for photo-3d

computer/TV-3d: this list would be for those interested in non-photography
(ie non-silver process) 3d. Buy/sell on these subjects would be on this
list.

I would sign up for the first two, maybe the third. Definitely not the
last. No offense, I'm just not interested in this subject. There are many
who would want just the first, just the second and third, or just the
fourth. Some would want all. Let's think of the future, with 5000 people
on this list. The internet will be better off with lists becoming more and
more specific. Remember, the magazine Stereo World was started primarily
by collectors of early stereoviews. If we don't split off a such a group
here, then eventually someone will start a new list just for these
collector folks anyway. And the result will be the same. Dick Wood
