part II:

IMAGE SELECTION

I can understand some people's apprehentions after reading the word
'contemporary' in the title of the exhibit, but this is meant to
indicate that the work is being produced today by people of various
backgrounds and interests, both within traditional genres and
new, innovative technologies and formats. It is hoped that the
selected images will give a clear indication of the many creative
ways 3D photography is currently being used.

Images will be chosen for their visual impact. This will be the first
time many of the visitors will be offered the chance to see good 3D
photography and I would like to leave a definite impression on them.
As it is also important to give a fair overview, the selection cannot
be weighed towards any particular genre (ie:landscape, portraiture,
computer generated, etc...), therefore I will be in the difficult
position of having to leave out possibly exceptional images if I have
received too many of one genre (please don't hunt me down! ;-)

It will be expected that the submitted images are properly mounted and
do not suffer from any obvious technical problems (such as over/under
exposure unless intended for effect).

METHOD OF PRESENTATION

This was a very difficult consideration since I am working with zero
outside funding. Because the majority of images I have experienced are
in slide format the main part of the exhibit will be in the form of two
custom-built lightboxes in which slides can be viewed. Other submitted
formats will require the artist to also offer an adequate viewing device.
Framing can be organized for lenticular, anaglyphic, view formats unless
the size exceeds available supplies.

The following is a very rough sketch of the lightboxes. It is estimated
that each 'station' will accomodate 10 images, for a total of 20 slides:

The viewers (the most expensive part of the construction!) are the standard
model available from Reel-3D, only with the luxury of being lighted by a
fluorescent tube inside the station. The interior of the box will be painted
a slightly warm white to balance the blue-ish light of the tube.

As you enter the exhibit there will be an overview of the history of 3D
using both artifacts and text panels. Fliers will be available for those
interested in joining the NSA and/or finding out more about 3D photography
(such as the Photo-3D forum!). Brief biographies will also give insight into
the artists represented and their techniques.
