yet more Sphinx

A television program last year claimed that the Sphinx had been covered
and uncovered, patched and eroded, a number of times before this century.
Apparently at some times, the patch material used contributed to the
damage to the rock. The old photograph mentioned in the earlier post
could have been taken shortly after some patching had been done, and before
the patching material fell apart.

Regarding the gender of the Sphinx, I had the impression that the one
Oedipus encountered was female. (What, nobody but George reads classical
Greek literature? :-) If the Sphinx in Egypt was carved to represent a
male ruler, it would presumably be considered male. But it might not
represent the same sort of critter.

Good news - S.D. claims that when the Sphinx is imaged from a distance
using the modern techniques of stereotelekirlian photography, the nose is
restored in the image to its original form!
:-)
