moderated adios from moderator

Readers who skim their photo3d's could easily have missed John B's swan
song. Rather than the platitudes of gratitude that are appropriate, I'd
like to say that photo3d'ers who subscribe to no other e-mail lists might
be unaware of how well run this one is. I belong to a dozen lists, all
technical, and all run by software eggheads and tolerant souls. None are
anywhere near as well run as photo3d, due to the combined skills of the
several people who make this happen. Can you imagine a list with (almost)
this much traffic, where bounced messages (to people who have 'moved') get
bounced to all members of the list? Or a list with members as
argumentative as p3d, where the moderator lets anyone say what they want,
when they want to? How about an active list whose moderator continually
says he will get around to having a digest available, but never does, so
you get 40+ messages a day? And half those messages are from one member
to another? This is what happens to anarchic lists, and no doubt political
or artistic lists are far worse.
There are some very long-winded p3d'ers, and some tempermental ones, and
some who cannot let a thread die until they have the last word, and some
who do very inappropriate & inconsiderate things. It would be CHAOS
without an outstanding moderator, and we will be very lucky if the
successors are as able as their predecessors, and if they last as long.
