The difficulty is probably a Pavlovian reaction among list members due
to a significant number of surreal hyper-shots that they've seen or made.
In general, I think it fair to say that one only notices "hyper" in
images others show them when it's a problem. Therefore one only
remembers hyper when it's bad. Pavlovian reenforcement!
It seems useful to discuss when not to use hyper-techniques and how
not to do it, and when not to use it when taken in that light. However,
I think you're right that positive assertions as to when it's appropriate
has not been common.
Discussion of what one looks for in the result, is IMHO, important
too.
To relate to your "spice" analogy, one can't talk about what dish to
put red-hot peppers into without first discussing if one loves or hates
spicy food. It makes a difference.
