Well took a visit down to the lab (basement) to get some test equipment
and conducted a small experiment. Put one side of a pair of polaroid
glasses in front of a flashlight and a piece of transluscent material in
front of the glasses. So the order was flashlight (or torchlight for our
English friends), polaroid glasses, and then transluscent material to be
tested for polarizing behavior or lack off. Put another pair of polaroid
glasses in front of my eye and rotated glasses till polarized light was
cancelled out. Some material didn't cancel out the light at all, others
introduced rainbow colors and some worked well and did cancel out the
light. The results were yeap, frosted tape works. Problem is getting a
wide enough tape to work with! Etched glass works fine also but don't
know about ground glass. Note, at least I think it was etched glass. What
I tried was an incandescent lamp and shined the flashlight through that.
Also tried an old 8mm movie editor. Put the polaroid glass where the
8mm film goes and looked at the glass screen display.
