Bob.....
When in Houston....if you like ART.....check out The Orange Show,
It's one man's architectural monument to the fruit he loved most. The Orange
Show foundation office is located across the street (Munger street, in a
Hispanic neighborhood south of the University of Houston, just off I-45). The
Orange Show is a fantastic, colorful (best to visit in bright light) tiled
maze (in somewhat disrepair). The folks at the foundation office keep a
library of amazing environmental folk art and could direct you to other
Houston sites like "the beer can house".
The Houston waterfront, yes the bayou, is home to sculpture by local
sculptors, call Lawndale art Alternative and Diverse Works for more
information about Watermelon Flats.
The Museum of fine arts has a Noguchi sculpture park, which is near oak lined
blvds, North and South. If you like sculpture and want to dive into Houston
culture, look up the Jimenez sculpture, in a latino park in the south part of
town, there is a fun restaurant called Doneraki in the same neighborhood,
with indoor fountain, lots of festive Mexican decorations and if your timing
is right, a strolling mariachi band.
One of the unrecognized great aspects of Houston culture is the cajun
sub-culture, if you are south of Houston (on Old Galveston road) check out
Pe-te's Cajun Dancehall. Go on Saturday early evening and eat the best
boudin and jambalaya you could hope for, followed by some honest down-home
cajun dance music...It is a beautiful fais-do-do scene. This could be a good
follow up to a day at NASA.
You will learn a lot about the town by listening to the radio, I recommend
Pacifica KPFT, low on the fm dial. Pe-te has a cajun show EARLY saturday
morning. You will hear about worthwhile local events on this station, forget
the stupid travel brochures.
In the realm of fine art, the Menil collection offers a complex in the
Montrose. In addition to the main museum, the Rothko chapel is a very quiet
and spiritual resting place, and the new Twombly museum is one of the most
unusually lit museums in the country, beautiful.
.....and don't miss Goode Co. BBQ on Kirby.
Enjoy and have fun!....Regar-d-d-d-s Jan Burandt & Jon Golden
