Telescope lenses

I friend of mine is considering buying a bigger telescope. If he 
likes it, he may sell me his little 'ol Celestron at a price I could 
afford, and then I could experiment with very long focal length 
hyper-stereo, which I would love to do. 

Any of the astronomers in this group willing to answer a question or 
two off line about telescope optics? I'd appreciate your help.
