on Dr-t=92s comments about the DSS=92s February contest:
-Bill Battle's first place picture was outstanding! For the first time I=
 was
fooled into thinking that this was a regular table-top and not
computer-generated! It showed a bunch of pencils arranged in a very
symmetric balancing configuration. I was impressed and puzzled by the
precise arrangement that did not seem to be supported from anywhere. Hear=
ing
that this was computer-generated solved the mystery and gave a taste of h=
ow
computers could beat the most patient table-top worker. But, I guess, ev=
en
computer work requires lots of patience. Great job Bill!

-Bill and I also had one picture each tied for second place. My picture =
was
a close-up of a sunflower showing remarkable (IMO) natural pattern/symmet=
ry.

-I was surprised by the quality of the images, especially the pictures ta=
ken
with a Realist-format camera. The quality of work in Detroit has improve=
d
tremendously from two years ago.

Dr-T,
I believe that you are mistaken. My =93Pencils=94 and my =93Red A=
rmy=94 both
tied with your sunflower. The pattern of balls that I had designed for =
you,
tied with your dice for first. When your sunflower showed I just knew t=
hat
my ball pattern would be blown out of first place. I was shocked when I
wasn=92t. I loved your dice. But, I would have scored the sunflower a pe=
rfect
9. My only guess for the reason it didn=92t, it was not as obvious a
=93pattern=94 as your dice. (I=92m not knocking the judges they have a to=
ugh job.
They did a good job.) Your sunflower was your best flower yet, that I ha=
ve
seen. The color and stereo was stunning.

My balls were my least favorite of my entries. I believe it did w=
ell
because of the extreme amount of depth that it displayed on screen. Ther=
e is
a fine line between extreme and offensive. If I had tried to squeeze ano=
ther
inch of depth, out of my mounting, it would have flopped. If you recall, =
I
flopped several in my early months. You may not realize it, I soak in e=
very
ounce of advice from my peers. My images are heavily influenced by tale=
nt
such as yourself and Bill Turner, to name a few. John Vala has been a tr=
ue
critic and technical assistant to help me bring my computer art into ster=
eo.
I would like to think that, as I=92ve improved / developed my techniques=
 in
the past year an a half, you and others at our club have been influenced=
 to
push the envelop of your talents. =20

I would still like to get together some with you to improve my
photographic skills. Maybe we could run some sort of small skills camp =
/
long weekend, in our off season this summer. We could have a stereograph=
ic
technique workshop, a lab work shop, a studio work shop, and a computer w=
ork
shop. I know that I would like to attend and even share some of my
techniques with the interested. =20

I you are right the quality of the images being shown at the club=
 is
getting better every month. There is allot of consistent talent in our c=
lub.
 I wish there were a =93Best of Dr-T=94, =93Best of Bill Turner=94, etc=
. cassettes
for 3-Discover. Maybe even some Viewmaster reels available to purchase o=
r
trade. That way when I=92m showing my friends my stuff I could also sho=
w them
those too. You could take it one step farther and make commercial views
available from this group. Are there other people interested in starting
some kind of organization for making the best of our stuff available to e=
ach
other and the interested general public??

I=92m sure that, I=92m putting my foot in my mouth and I have no=
 way to
produce the results of any of these dreams. I=92m just fishing for comme=
nts or
others who might be dreaming along the same lines. Any fish out there?
