  You could just use a photo slave. As long as you aren't at a
wedding (or similar) where other flashes are going off.

  If you have a powerful flash you could bounce it off the ceiling
and let the camera flash do the front fill. The combined lighting
will be more even and the bounce will fill in shadows caused by
the in-camera flash.
