P3D Setting up for stereo pairs?

So I've made my rig to shoot stereo pairs with one 35mm camera - very slick
too if I say so myself. Used this wierd sliding bed type thingy I got at a
techno flea-market. It's about 12" long by 1"x1" and the platform that
slides along the length is moved by some internal piston doo-hickey - there
are tiny nozzles on either end of the rig to force the platform back and
forth. Needless to say I am not using air to move it....

But I digress.

I am planning on shooting some interiors and will be viewing with one of
those cheapo plastic viewers that accept two separate slides. So my
question is (at last)...

Is there a formula for determining the distance I need to move the camera
in relation to focal length of my lens and or camera to object distance?

Conversely, if there is a rule of thumb I would rather know that.

I know I could shoot film and find out that way, but I would rather tap
this bottomless well of knowledge.

TIA, Les, Dallas.
