This may have already been answered, since I'm a few days behind in reading
the digest:

A lower cost alternative to Adobe Photoshop is Paint Shop Pro, from JASC.
Paint Shop Pro seems to have many of the capabilities of Photoshop
(disclaimer: I've never used Photoshop), including support for Photoshop
Plugins, and costs about $70, if I recall correctly. Further information
about Paint Shop Pro, including a free 30-day trial version for download, is
available at http://www.jasc.com .
