It is possible, and the answer is the same as the one that made you be able
to freeview stereo pairs in the first place: PRACTICE!!!
The pair in the stereogram is seperated by a much smaller distance than the
regular stereo pair, plus there are no helping marks to guide you, usually.
Some people might have trouble diverging their eyes just a little bit. One
useful excercise is after you "lock" the pair to change the spacing (reduce
it). You might have trouble doing this and lose the fusion when you try to
move the pair, but it is worth trying.
Cross-viewing the stereogram should not be a problem either but you should
be able to clearly tell if you are parallel viewing or cross-viewing stereo
pairs. If in doubt, try reversing the pair and see what happens.
