I tried to ask about this myself in Dec. 96, but it did not reach the
photo 3d list, so I asked Andrew Woods. Here is my question and his
reply. Hope this shines some light on this topic!

Andrew Woods answer:
I saw a system by DMA last time I went to the conference. The display
generated a virtual image which appeared to stick out from the display.
Unfortunately it was NOT a stereoscopic display. The virutal image was
only as dimensional as the image generation source. i.e. if a CRT is
was
flat. Only time it would be actually a three dimensional virtual image
was if the image came from a small statue (for example) inside the
display
housing.
