re: Artec scanner

The resolution specifications for the Scanrom 4E on the Artec web page
don't help much: "Resolution 100 ~ 4800 dpi software selectable." They
should at least give the nominal resolution of the scanner. My guess is
100-200dpi. Whatever alleged increase in resolution is achieved through
software interpolation really has little to do with the scanner.

The cheap ($119) Logitech Color Scan feed-thru type scanner I just bought
only scans color prints at 200 dpi. I tried to increase the resolution
through Paint Shop Pro shareware software, but it didn't help. Any one
have good results with interpolation software for web-quality viewing
of 3d slides or prints?

One nice feature of the Logitech is that it is detachable and can be used
as a hand scanner. I wonder if there is any way I can hand-scan slides
over a lightbox, or suitable multi-light source. The small slide area
would probably make hand-scanning impractical.

On another topic, I have been going to San Francisco several times a year
and I get a chuckle as I walk down Kearny (I think) and see the basically
same 100+ used cameras and lenses at ridiculously high prices in this
camera store's windows. I think it is Discount Cameras at 33 Kearny, but
there is also a Cameras Unlimited at 15 Kearny. Once I did walk in to ask
a question..which I regretted :-).
